Early European settlers called it "The Barrens" - the huge expanse of prairie that blanketed much of central Maryland. Now, the surviving remnants of these tall grasses grow in the Soldier's Delight Environment Area. Visitors to Soldier's Delight can explore many of the rare habitats supported there, explore the visitor's center, hike, and discover chromium mines dug in the early 1800's.
