Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipGUEST: This was a gun that was hanging in my grandparents' home for as long as I can remember.
APPRAISER: It's a U.S. model 1881 trapdoor forager shotgun, made specifically for use as a shotgun for small game and hunting.
It's a 20 gauge shotgun.
They made 1,376 of these guns at Springfield Arsenal between 1881 and 1885.
The gun is serial number 59, so it's from the first year of production at Springfield, uh, where they made 251 in 1881.
The serial number is a little light, but it's there.
And it's nice to see such an early two-digit gun.
In today's market, these guns are desirable.
A nice untouched example like this, at auction, will probably sell between $2,000 and $2,500.
GUEST: Holy smokes.
A whole lot more than I figured it was.
